What are self tapping screws?
Self tapping screws cut or form their own mating thread as they are driven, removing the need for a pre-tapped hole and dramatically speeding up assembly. They are the workhorse fastener for sheet metal, plastics and thin sections across countless industries.

Thread types: Type A, Type AB and Type B
Choosing the right point and thread form is the difference between a fast, secure fixing and a stripped hole:
- Type A (sharp point, coarse thread): thin sheet metal and softwoods; needs a pilot hole in thicker stock.
- Type AB: the general-purpose thread, with a finer, deeper thread and a sharp gimlet point for sheet metal, plastics and light alloys. This is the most widely specified point we produce.
- Type B (blunt point, spaced thread): heavier gauge metal, castings and pre-punched or pre-drilled holes, where the blunt point starts in an existing hole rather than piercing the material.
